"Role Models" & "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" movie review
i got to see a screening of "Role Models" and i thought the movie was sick, but again i came into it not really think much of it. i'm not gonna hype it up cuz usually when you hear from other people how funny or sick a movie was, you end up forming certain expectations for the movie and you end up not enjoying the movie. i might not have made sense, but basically just enjoy the movie for what it is.
so, if you're at the theatre and are still undecided what to watch, you should watch "Role Models". and if you end up not enjoying the movie, tell me and i'll shave my beard. maybe.
new term: "whispering eye." JR is a whispering eye.
UPDATE (10/30): went to another screening and saw "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" and it was ok. just your typical comedy you expect from Seth Rogen. funny movie but nothing too special.
i'm giving out 2 free screening passes to "Soul Men" for Monday November 3. contact me if you want em. just gotta get to the theatre early because it is first come first serve. it was Bernie Mac's last film.

NFL Player: Eric Wright
Courtesy of Mark Marzan. Soon to be MYL blogger.
This is a pretty cool article he found on our once classmate Eric Wright. From the hallways of Riordan High School, getting kicked out USC, to being drafted out of UNLV...its crazy to think that he started off where we were and that gives me a sense of pride knowing that he made it big.
Enjoy the article...

Rays vs. Phillies
With the World Series about to begin in a few minutes, I'll say that the Rays with take the series in 6 games. More details on how and why if I have time at work.
I just wanted to get my prediction out of the way.

Tim Lincecum news.
hopefully he wins the CY Young award, which is for the sickest pitcher in the universe. Nov. 11 is when the CY Young is announced. oh ya he's part Filipino too.
via sfgiants.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- It remains to be seen whether Tim Lincecum will receive the National League Cy Young Award. But Lincecum's peers already have given him their endorsement. Lincecum won two elections as the NL's top pitcher for 2008 in separate polls of Major League players announced Monday. The Giants right-hander was recognized by The Sporting News, which canvassed 314 players, and captured the Players Choice Award, determined through voting conducted in September by the accounting firm KPMG.

ruSPN #2: This is the CHANGE we need.
Mike Nolan is officially out as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers! this guy was horrible. his play calling was bad, the challenges he challenged weren't challengeable, he was too worried about his suit, he sucked. now Mike Singletary is the head coach which is cool hopefully he can turn it around. we'll see how he does but Mike Holmgren would be sick. he knows how to run the true West Coast offense, from the Bay Area, and taught under Bill Walsh.
MLB Playoffs: thank you the bums (dodgers) are not in the World Series. dodgers' fans pooring beer...
so disrespectful! what a waste of beer.
NBA: the Warriors suck but I still love them. I think we might see another 10+ year playoff drought soon. there's no direction with this team especially with the front office not being able to get it together.

here's a speech by Jimmy Valvano who was diagnosed with metastatic bone cancer.
"To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."

The Rays 2008 Season Appreciation Post
From Lil' Wayne's ESPN Blog:
You know how you can envision a team in the World Series? I don't see [Boston]. I close my eyes and I see the Tampa Bay Rays. I'm a big emotion guy. I'm a heart guy, and I think they all play that way. They have nothing to compare this to. Whether they make it to the World Series or not, we're watching the first winning baseball team Tampa Bay has ever fielded. That right there is always amazing, no matter who the team is.I can't believe I'm quoting Lil Wayne on sports but he called it before the playoffs even started.
I know I don't follow baseball nearly as closely as I used to as when I was a kid but I can still appreciate the historical perspective of each sport and right now I gotta give props to the Tampa Bay Rays. I haven't watched any of this year's baseball playoffs except for the last 3 innings of the Rays/Sox game 7. I haven't been interested in baseball all season but this was just something that I had to witness as a sports fan in general. And just when I thought the Red Sox were going to end Tampa's Cinderella season in the 8th inning when David Ortiz stood at the plate with 2 players on base, Tampa's bullpen pulled it off shutting out some of the biggest names in baseball in the final two innings. And I gotta give props to David Price who just made his major league debut in late September but he seemed to have ice in his veins as he proceeded to get the 3rd out in the bottom of the 8th with bases loaded and then finished to save the game.
This has to be the equivalent of the Charlotte Bobcats going to the NBA Finals or the Houston Texans going to the Super Bowl. The Rays are just not a franchise that is associated with winning. Maybe only in baseball something like this can happen since each team does develop their own farm system but still... the Devil Rays??... or excuse me "the Rays." Maybe God awarded them for banishing "Devil" from their team name. Nevertheless, they defeated one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. They haven't even played one game of the World Series but I can appreciate what they've pulled off this season already.
Hey if they can do it... why not the Warriors, Giants, or 49ers? Stories like the Rays give fans hope for their favorite teams... unless your quarterback is JT O'Sullivan. I guess there's always next year.
And I hope the Rays beat the Phillies in the World Series.

a GIANT mistake
On September 23, 2008 the Giants held its 2nd Filipino Heritage Night of the season. Because of the success of the first Filipino Heritage Night, the SF Giants made moves to plan another night in honor of the large Filipino population in the Bay Area. While many fans loved the commemorative T-shirt given away with tickets purchased for the 1st event, many might not have been so happy with the commemorative hat given away on the 2nd Filipino Heritage Night. Take a look at the image below and figure out what's wrong with the item (no, the answer isn't "tam4svp," haha i found this on eBay)...
Now for those of you who were able to spot the flaw in this item, much props to you. I wouldn't really expect many people to figure it out, considering our generation of Filipinos isn't as knowledgeable about our culture as our elders. What's even more sad about the mistake on this hat is the fact that it was screened and approved by a Filipino person. So, the SF Giants aren't at complete fault for this mishap. We could only really blame ourselves and our generation's lack of cultural awareness.
Before you start to get a headache trying to figure out what's wrong with this hat, i'll give a few hints....
1. it isn't the # of sunrays
2. it isn't the amount or positioning of the stars
3. it isn't the colors of the flag
So, what the hell is wrong with it?
Don't get me wrong, the colors of the flag are correct. They rightfully used white, yellow, blue and red. HOWEVER, the red field and the blue field are in the INCORRECT positions. Some might think it isn't a big issue, but if you knew a little about the history of the flag, you would know it is an issue.
Did you know?...
The flag is displayed with the blue field on top in time of peace and the red field on top in time of war. Now if we were a bit more culturally aware, such a mistake wouldn't have been designed and hundreds of people wouldn't ignorantly wear it at an event honoring Filipinos. I encourage you guys to learn a little about your culture, even if its just the basics like your national flag. When speaking to elders, sometimes we wonder "what the hell are you talking about? why do you think like that? why do you act like that? we're in America, get over it"... i challenge you to think in another light and know your roots... then maybe you'll have a better understanding about yourself, your family, and society in general.
Some basics about the Philippine Flag
1. The 8 primary rays of the sun represent the first 8 provinces (Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Tarlac) that sought indepence from Spain at the start of the Philippine Revolution.
2. The 3 stars represent the major islands of the Philippines (Luzon, Mindanao, Visayas)
3. The white triangle stands for equality and fraternity. Blue stands for peace, truth, and justice. Red stands for patriotism and valor.

808's & Heartbreak Listening Event
(pic via Kanye's blog)
Rollingstone: Kanye West’s Listening Party: Lights, Heartbreak, Nudity (article)
"More than 700 invited guests watched and listened as Beecroft’s 40 models slowly changed position with each song, some of them wearing fuzzy wigs that covered their faces. Just as provocative were West’s new tracks, including the singles “Love Lockdown” and “Heartless,” mostly obsessed with romantic pain and loss. All vocals were sung and treated with the electro “auto-tune” effect. But there was no rapping or overt sampling, just emotional waves of electronic sound, beats and occasional strings."
Fader: Vanessa Beecroft & Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak Listening Event (article)
"After eventually silencing the chatty room, he introduced Beecroft, who revealed that the piece was conceptualized and executed in one week, which is one third of the time it took West to record the entire album. Then West delivered a monologue about how this album is about the freedom to do what you want to do and that he used Auto-Tune because it is the most fun thing ever. Then he said 808s & Heartbreak was about emotional nakedness. Then he said he'll have another album out next June."
Here is the full version of Heartless. Kanye says its still unmastered.

Focus & Determination
I have a daily calendar of success quotes on my desk at work. It helps me stay focused and sometimes gives me some new inspiration for work. I don't always know exactly what I want to do or exactly where I want to end up but I know what direction I want to go. I thought I'd post this quote today because it reminds me to chip away at my goals everyday and although I may not reach them overnight, anything can be done over time with focus and determination.

Business As Usual, Vol. 4: The Best Financial Advise
A client emailed one of my financial advisors this joke today:
"If you had purchased $1,000 of Delta Air Lines stock one year ago, you would have $49 left. With Fannie Mae, you would have $2.50 left of the original $1,000. With AIG, you would have less than $15 left. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drunk all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, you would have $214 cash. Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle."

preview of my future career
(so i lost a bet to krys...long story short...i had to write an article about her so here it is)
Succeeding through Experience: Krystina Orozco’s Life After College
Compared to most post-college graduates, Krystina Orozco is equipped with knowledge and life experience that is used to her advantage.
At 23 years old, Orozco is a USF graduate and has traveled around the world in her own quest for a better understanding of life. Her significant destination would be England and her stay would last anywhere from weeks to months. Orozco’s frequent travels would obviously strain the relationships with her family and friends. Despite foreign lands and the fear of the unknown, she took advantage of the opportunity.
“It worked out for the best,” said Orozco.
She now returns to England for vacation and to maintain the friendships she made while there.
After her experience in England, Orozco returned home to California. A Daly City native, Orozco used her Bachelor’s degree in communications to obtain a job as a reporter for Philippine News. While working for Philippine News, Orozco enjoyed being involved with the community. She began networking and sharpened her writing skills during her time with the newspaper. She left Philippine News after a year to pursue other opportunities.
Orozco’s future goals include becoming an editor for a magazine or working as a coordinator in public relations. Her incentive is to be in management hoping to branch out to different countries.
No matter what Orozco decides to do, she constantly gains the experience needed for her next step. And the last trait that she has over her fellow post-college graduates is motivation.
“It’s always working yourself up to that top position,” said Orozco.
